I love love LOVE New Year’s Eve. It is one of the few holidays where I really get into tradition. I started cleaning my house this morning. I have already put on my black-eyed peas and I’m about to start my greens. 🙂 This evening, I will be at somebody’s church to pray in the New Year, then meet up with friends to celebrate. We don’t party hop because as the old folks say, you need to get somewhere and sit still. *LOL* Some folks might think this is extra, even superstitious. However, I believe that there is significant relevance to our traditions.
1.) Eating black-eyed peas and greens represent the coins and dollars or prosperity we desire.
2.) Cleaning your house represents a physical and spiritual cleansing.
3.) Surrounding yourself with friends and family to celebrate the new year. As the old folks say, how you bring in the new year (and with whom) determines how your year will be.
4.) Celebrating Kwanzaa to promote family, community and culture.
4.) Praying in the new year honors the emancipation of the slaves. And how powerful is it to emancipate, to break chains, to be freed from bondage before the new year. It also is our opportunity to give thanks to God as you remember how you got over to another year.
This is some good stuff people. What are some of your traditions?
NYE truly ushers in a spirit of renewed hope and re-dedication to life. We just have to remember that every year, day, hour, minute and second is an opportunity to change course.
I also want to take the time to say thank you to each person who takes a little time out of their schedule to read my blog. This blog has been a lesson in confidence, discipline and faith for me. This is only the beginning of “ThatKellieGirl”. You will see some new and exciting features in the months ahead. If you like what you have seen so far, keep reading. And if you happen to be inspired or a light bulb goes off, don’t keep it to yourself, pass the post along! 😉 We are going to explore the world and life together. Are you ready?
Much peace, love and blessings from ThatKellieGirl.
