Freedom Friday: The Fela Edition

Hello Good People!

I hope each of you had a great week.  This weekend kicks off numerous celebrations in honor of the birth of Fela Kuti (October 15th), the father of Afrobeat and political activist.  There will be celebrations until the end of the month in NYC, Philly and right here in DC! See event below.  If you aren’t familiar with this brilliant artist, you must be living under a rock since a broadway play about him has been getting rave reviews.  I have seen the play twice!  Get familiar.

Check out some other “ThatKellieGirl” approved events.  Be safe out there. Smooches! 🙂

The award-winning new gospel musical comedy “Sanctified”, plays the historic Lincoln Theatre for a limited engagement. The musical comedy shines a light on the African-American church and the congregations that sustain it. When the East Piney Grove Baptist Church falls on hard times, their last chance may be the upcoming 3oth annual gospel revival. Desperate, the ambitious new pastor calls on his diva-esque cousin to help update the choir’s staid repertoire (and lend her extraordinary voice), but the church elders are not moved.
