africa rising

ThatKellieGirl would’ve loved to travel to South Africa to attend the Africa Rising concert showcasing the music of South African DJ and producer, Black Coffee .  It was a historic day for house music and South African history– celebrating their progress and future at the Moses Mabhida stadium.  However, for those of us who couldn’t make the concert, we are in luck!  You can experience the whole event on the The Africa Rising DVD or  3 disc audio album.

For those of you who aren’t familiar with Black Coffee, Nathi “Black Coffee” Maphumulo was born in Durban in KwaZulu Natal and grew up in the Eastern Cape in Mthatha.  He eventually moved back to Durban to major in jazz at Natal Tech.  However, he left school before graduating to begin his music career.  In 2005, Black Coffee’s meteoric rise to fame came after his debut album “Black Coffee”.  Since then, Black Coffee has led the way in  global house music.

The Africa Rising concert is not only a highlight for house music, but also a milestone for South African history.  This was the first-of-its-kind of stage performance in South Africa that included a DJ, band, vocalists, and 24-piece orchestra.  Some of the featured vocalists included Zakes Bantwini, Victor Ntoni, Brothers of Peace, Bucie and DJ Oskido.

Check out the behind the scene footage on the filming of “Africa Rising” as well as some performances taken from the DVD.  Enjoy! 🙂
