MidWeek Mixx

So everyone is buzzing about Solange‘s new EP “True”.  And for some reason, everyone is surprised that it’s actually…good!  ThatKellieGirl wants to go on record in saying, “I’m not surprised.”

I’m not surprised because when you don’t have the rules and pressures of a major label, you are able to experiment and figure out what works for you.  And Solange hasn’t been afraid to figure it out…with her hair, her fashion, and her music.  It seems like Solange has truly worked to be “True” to herself and to do things her way, and I believe its beginning to pay off.

When I was in Nigeria, I actually got a sneak peek of her single “Losing You”.  I was quite excited to see the beautiful African “Dandy Lion” aesthetic represented in the video.  Earlier this year, ThatKellieGirl covered an exhibit highlighting Dandy Lions and the black male aesthetic around the globe.

Before “True”, Solange had a solid album with “Sol-Angel and the Hadley St. Dreams“, which received positive reviews.  I know I rocked the album.  I particularly was feeling  “I Decided“, “T.O.N.Y.” and “Sandcastle Disco.”   So when I found out about her new EP, I was really excited to hear what more she had to offer.  And Solange is following up with a third studio album set to realease in early 2013.

In the meantime, here is her video for the single “Losing You.”  And you can hear the whole “True” EP for free on Spotify.

  1. I’ve always liked Solange because she doesn’t follow the rules. She doesn’t have to and her music, while not as mainstream as her sister, is much more creative. She has allowed herself to take risks and it shows!
