Happy Mother’s Day

I hope everyone enjoyed their Mother’s Day celebrations today.  It was a bit windy, but the sun was shining down on us.  I wasn’t able to spend Mother’s Day with my mom, but we did get an opportunity to talk this morning (like most Sunday mornings 🙂 ). The older I get, I cherish these conversations.  This year, my mother was in a very serious car accident, and the thought of her not being here any longer really impacted me.  It is so easy to take for granted your loved ones.  In my youth, I couldn’t wait to get a way from home.  I was going to be my own woman on my own terms.  I was going to travel the world, party all night, do what the men did, and conquer the world.  Yet, when my mother was laying in her hospital bed, none of this mattered.  And life had begun to teach me that life isn’t about partying and conquering. I realized I still had so much more I had to learn from my mother and I still needed her.  I still needed her wisdom and guidance to face the years ahead.  I am grateful to say that my mother made a full recovery, and it was a strong reminder that the day is never promised.

I am now in a place where I have strong sense of my womanhood.  I believe this only occurred when I humbled myself, I then could take her wisdom to heart.  This was an integral moment in my maturity as a woman.  It has made me feel more powerful and confident than ever.  When I get up in the morning to put on my clothes, I look in the mirror, and I see my mother looking back at me.  I smile because I know behind it is the strength, courage, wisdom and love that propels another generation of women into the future.

Here are some quotes about mothers that struck a chord with me.  I hope you enjoy like I did. 🙂

Grown don’t mean nothing to a mother. A child is a child. They get bigger, older, but grown. In my heart it don’t mean a thing.

-Toni Morrison

The most important thing a father can do for his children is to love their mother.

-Author Unknown

There is nothing like a mama-hug.

-Adabella Radici

Mama exhorted her children at every opportunity to ‘jump at de sun.’ We might not land on the sun, but at least we would get off the ground.
-Zora Neale Hurston

A mother understands what a child does not say.

-Author Unknown

A mother’s love liberates.
-Maya Angelou

And so our mothers and grandmothers have, more often than not anonymously, handed on the creative spark, the seed of the flower they themselves never hoped to see — or like a sealed letter they could not plainly read.

-Alice Walker

My mother never gave up on me. I messed up in school so much they were sending me home, but my mother sent me right back.

-Denzel Washington

My mother’s great. She has the major looks. She could stop you from doing anything, through a closed door even, with a single look.

-Whoopi Goldberg

Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you.

-Exodus 20:12
