When it comes to black film soundtracks, Loves Jones tends to be on the top ten list. This soundtrack is most definitely on rotation in my Ipod. There are so many classic joints on this soundtrack. It is one of the few CDs for me that I don’t push the skip button. I also beam when I look at the line-up of artists. I, mean, the roster is straight bananas…Maxwell, Lauryn Hill, Groove Theory, Cassandra Wilson and Dionne Farris to name a few. It really takes me back when I would head to spoken word events at Bar Nun, Harambee Cafe and Mangos in DC. And everyone was a poet spoken word artist. Also at this time, Neo-Soul (a now taboo label for artists) was coming strong to the main stage. All around me, I witnessed a renewed creative movement within the black community. Love Jones the movie and soundtrack provides an authentic glimpse of our creative past.
This is why I can’t wait to see Dionne Farris (of Arrested Development and Love Jones fame) tomorrow evening. Her voice is unforgettable on the songs “Tennessee” and “Hopeless”. However, for those who fell off, it didn’t stop there. She’s still been creating beautiful music. About two years ago, Dionne introduced a collection of songs only through short film videos. This is the second short film from Dionne Farris’ video album “Remember My Name – Vol. 1”. The films are produced and directed by Jason Orr for FunkJazz Kafé® /Life Arts Films.
This Spring, Dionne will be releasing new music. I can’t wait to hear it. You can go to her website to listen to music and to buy/ download songs from Dionne directly.
So for the lover in you, come check her out! You know you don’t have anything else to do. 🙂
