Freedom Friday: The Earth Day Edition

Hello Friends!  Happy Friday.

This weekend is shaping up rather nicely.  There will be beautiful weather and lots of fun things to do.  In the spirit of Earth Day, ThatKellieGirl will be volunteering at the White House Garden Tours.  I love flowers and the White House Kitchen Garden is a great model on how to and what to grow in your home garden.  Afterwards, I am attending a tea with my God Daughter and her Mother.  As you know, I always am excited to don a hat and a pair of gloves! :-)

There also are several festivals either kicking off or closing out this weekend.  Whatever you do don’t miss them.

Starting us off is The Water Street Project which is an 11 day-long  temporary arts exhibition in a vacant building underneath Whitehurst Freeway in Georgetown.  The project’s grand opening is tonight at 8PM.

The U.S. National Parks Service celebrates National Park Week with activities and promoting people to visit their local national park.

Activist Van Jones will discuss and sign his new book, Rebuild the Dream at Busboys and Poets (14th & V Sts NW) at 6:30PM.

The Earth Day Rally will take place on the National Mall as well as a “Float In” with Ralph Nader marking the 40th anniversary of The Clean Water Act and to say no to dirty, polluted water.  Here is a list of Earth Day activities and events in the area.

And Filmfest DC is closing out this weekend, so try to find time to see some provocative, exciting, and often brave stories from varying perspectives and showcasing important voices.

Whatever you do, stay safe, have fun and keep the faith. :-)

Peace and Blessings, ThatKellieGirl

Freedom Friday: Emancipation Day Weekend

Hey Good People!

How is everything going?

I must admit, I have had a great week.  And it all started out at the White House!  I had the honor and privilege to volunteer at the White House Easter Egg Roll.  We worked really hard and it was truly worth it.

Initially, I was assigned to the Press Team, but when my shift started, the First Family had already made their appearance, so the press was pretty much gone.  So I was promptly moved to the Jump Team.  And let me tell you, that is exactly what we did! :-)   Wherever we were needed, we jumped to it.  We looked for kids separated from parents to manning activities to being a human barricade during concert performances.  However, my favorite assignment was detail to Malia and Sasha Obama.  The First Daughters and their guests made an afternoon  appearance to see Janelle Monae perform.  Glad to see the First Daughters  and I have some similar musical tastes. :-)   My group had to stand between the First Daughters and the crowd.  I was right there with them!  It was cool to see them laughing, having fun and enjoying Janelle Monae’s performance.  If anything, it made me realize that they are just like the rest of us except that their father is the leader of the Free World. :-)

Next, the Jump Team followed the First Daughters and their friends to the obstacle course for some friendly competition.  Again. It was nice to see how well-adjusted they are to people gawking at them.  Malia was very friendly and gracious ny waving at attendees who said “hi” to her.

We also had an opportunity to see some celebrities– from Etan Thomas, Stephen A. Smith, Dougie Fresh, Forest Whitaker and The Harlem Globetrotters.  Unfortunately I couldn’t take pictures while I was volunteering. :-(

I met a lot of dedicated volunteers at the event.  Some of them have volunteered for over 20 years!  They talked about how this event means so much to attendees.  People come from across the country to attend the White House Easter Egg Roll, and will remember this event for the rest of their lives.  It also was interesting to find out that the Obama administration truly has opened this event to more people.  At one point, the event was more exclusive for Congressional members, staff and friends.  Now, the White House Easter Egg Roll hosts up to 3o,000 people starting at 7:30am and ending at 7:30PM.  And there were several activities: an egg hunt,  egg dying, arts and crafts, story time, cooking demonstrations, musical performances, yoga, and the egg roll.  And the White House staff did a great job at hosting an amazing and memorable event.  Shout out to our leader, Tess! I would encourage every parent to submit their name into the lottery to attend this event because it is truly worth it.

So from the Easter Egg Roll to Emancipation wDay weekend, there are so many great events going on just in time for a very warm weekend.

Also, be on the look out for the next ThatKellieGirl webisode!  It’s guaranteed to get the body moving. :-)   Have fun and be safe out there.

Peace and Blessings, ThatKellieGirl

White House Garden Tour

Hey Folks!

Check out my pics from the White House Garden Tour from yesterday.  It was a little nippy and cloudy outside, but we had a fantastic time on the grounds of the White House.  There was a military band playing (not sure which branch) and plenty of beautiful flowers and scenery.

The White House Garden Tours have been a tradition since 1972 when Pat Nixon first opened the White House gardens to the public. Visitors are invited to view the Jacqueline Kennedy Garden, Rose Garden, Children’s Garden and South Lawn of the White House.  A new addition to the tour was First Lady Obama’s Kitchen Garden.   The garden was named in honor of Thomas Jefferson.  The vegetables were grown from heirloom seeds used by Jefferson at his estate,  Monticello.  I was quite impressed.  You might see ThatKellieGirl in some overalls in the future. :-)

Enjoy!

Act Fast! Tickets for the White House Easter Egg Roll

2010 Souvenir White House Easter Eggs

The White House Easter Egg Roll is a tradition which dates back to 1878. The event has grown from a few local children rolling eggs on the White House Lawn to a national event filled with live entertainment, sports, interactive cooking demonstrations and of course the traditional rolling of Easter eggs. The Easter Egg Roll will promote healthy and active living and is designed for children 12 years of age and under in conjunction with First Lady’s Let’s Move! initiative, a national campaign to combat childhood obesity. The 2011 White House Easter Egg Roll will be held on Monday, April 25.

Originally young children in Washington, D.C. would flock to Capitol Hill every Monday after Easter for egg rolling and a day of activities. Members of Congress grew tired of the growing crowds and passed an Act of Congress which prohibited egg rolling on the Capitol grounds. The event was moved to the White House in 1878 after President Hayes was approached by young children to use his backyard to roll eggs. Nearly every Easter since, the White House has invited young children to roll eggs on the White House lawn. Today, the Easter Egg Roll is the largest public event held at the White House.

As in past years, an online lottery will be conducted to choose the lucky winners of tickets. Signing up for the lottery is free of charge. Tickets for winners are free of charge.  The lottery will open for entries on Thursday, March 10th at 12:01 a.m. EST, and will close on Sunday, March 13th at 11:59 p.m. EST. Tickets are free of charge and are non transferable.
