Happy Friday Good Folks!

The one great thing about a hot day, is a warm evening.  ThatKellieGirl loves it when the sun sets, and the evening brings a comfortable temperature.  It’s  a great opportunity to enjoy some work after events like Jazz in the Sculpture Garden

Or sit near the water to enjoy Ledisi with special guests Eric Benet and Chrisette Michelle will perform at Pier 6 Pavilion in Baltimore.

Or later tonight, you can totally relax by listening to WPFW’s Soul Conversations on 89.3FM.  ThatKellieGirl will be talking about the latest musical happenings.

And before the weekend ends, there are several festivals you might want to catch.  StepAfrika! closes out their run at the Atlas Theater.  And the DC Black Theater Festivals as well as the Source Theater Festival closes out.

Whatever you do, keep cool and be safe. See you on the other side! :-)

Peace and Blessings, ThatKellieGirl

Freedom Friday: The Battle of Puebla Edition

Good Morning!  TGIF.

ThatKellieGirl didn’t realize that Cinco de Mayo was a big holiday until I moved to DC.  Then I found out it was mainly a marketing ploy by many businesses to make a profit.  In DC, folks will find any reason to have a party!  However, I felt it was important to find out how this celebration originated.

Freedom Friday: The Earth Day Edition

Hello Friends!  Happy Friday.

This weekend is shaping up rather nicely.  There will be beautiful weather and lots of fun things to do.  In the spirit of Earth Day, ThatKellieGirl will be volunteering at the White House Garden Tours.  I love flowers and the White House Kitchen Garden is a great model on how to and what to grow in your home garden.  Afterwards, I am attending a tea with my God Daughter and her Mother.  As you know, I always am excited to don a hat and a pair of gloves! :-)

There also are several festivals either kicking off or closing out this weekend.  Whatever you do don’t miss them.

Starting us off is The Water Street Project which is an 11 day-long  temporary arts exhibition in a vacant building underneath Whitehurst Freeway in Georgetown.  The project’s grand opening is tonight at 8PM.

The U.S. National Parks Service celebrates National Park Week with activities and promoting people to visit their local national park.

Activist Van Jones will discuss and sign his new book, Rebuild the Dream at Busboys and Poets (14th & V Sts NW) at 6:30PM.

The Earth Day Rally will take place on the National Mall as well as a “Float In” with Ralph Nader marking the 40th anniversary of The Clean Water Act and to say no to dirty, polluted water.  Here is a list of Earth Day activities and events in the area.

And Filmfest DC is closing out this weekend, so try to find time to see some provocative, exciting, and often brave stories from varying perspectives and showcasing important voices.

Whatever you do, stay safe, have fun and keep the faith. :-)

Peace and Blessings, ThatKellieGirl

Freedom Friday: The Fall Edition

Hey Good Folks!

TGIF. :-)

Today is the official first day of fall!  As much as I love summer, I am not sad to see the hot and humid temperatures leave.  I am looking forward to the cool temperatures, the warm clothing, the hats, the scarves, the boots (I love my boots!), the beautiful colored leaves, the pumpkins patches and hay rides.  I guess my midwest sensibilities are showing! :-)   So the season is just right for all of the fabulous festivals that are kicking off this weekend.  There are some great events for everyone.  You can start off  with some political networking and socializing at the 2011 Annual Legislative Caucus for the Congress Black Caucus at the Washington Convention Center.  If you can’t make it down there, you can watch parts of the conference on their webcast.  You also can visit the free showcase exhibits to check out job opportunities, businesses and the author’s pavilion.  There are also various receptions and parties throughout the city.

If you prefer to shed the suit and tie for the weekend, Kindred will be performing at the Birchmere on Sunday.

Make sure to stay safe out there. Enjoy!

Peace and Blessings, ThatKellieGirl
