Freedom Friday

Hello Everyone!

It is poppin’ this weekend with several events and activities.  There is just too much going on!  Africa Underground, as always, is sold out.  However, Queen MakedaZeba Bar and U Street Music Hall will be jumpin’ this weekend.  Just make sure you get out the house.

Peace, ThatKellieGirl

This event includes an interactive museum of youth who pose as still figures and, when a button is pushed, come alive to speak about the life and achievements of the figure they are representing.  It culminates with a vignette which is based in part on the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. In preparation to portray these historic figures, youth complete background research and prepare to teach visitors about the life and work of the figures they are representing.  The performance will also take place at the Kennedy Center on Saturday, March 3 at 5PM.

Music Monday

Happy Monday Everyone!

Last week, the official video for Esperanza Spalding’s newest single “Black Gold” featuring Algebra Blessett befittingly premiered on the first day of Black History Month.  This is her first single from her new album Radio Music Society, out on March 20th.  Esperanza is coming strong on Radio Music Society with  top-notch guest musicians and collaborators such as jazz legends Jack DeJohnette and Billy Hart; guitar heroes Jef Lee Johnson and Lionel Loueke; an array of master vocalists including Algebra Blessett, Lalah Hathaway, Gretchen Parlato, Leni Stern and Becca Stevens; hip-hop giant Q-Tip (who performs on and co-produced two tracks); and two Portland-based musicians, Janice Scroggins and Dr. Thara Memory, who provided essential mentorship in Spalding’s youth.

So until March 20th, get a taste of Radio Music Society with “Black Gold”.   Receive a Free Audio Download Of  “City Of Roses” From Esperanza here.  Enjoy!

Freedom Friday: The MLK Edition

Good Afternoon Everyone!

TGIF (and for the long weekend). :-)

I hope  you take advantage of the MLK Holiday by giving back to your community on Monday.  I understand that many folks use the long weekend to get their party on.  And I am all about enjoying your weekends.  However, we should dedicate in particularly MLK Day and several weekends throughout the year to volunteer.  (I actually believe we need to take back are holidays from corporations, but that a whole different post.)

So why not begin the habit of volunteering on the MLK Holiday this year?  And when you finish volunteering this weekend, challenge yourself to volunteer another weekend.

There several places throughout the District where you can lend a helping hand the weekend (and every weekend :-) ).  Please check out these following organizations to find out about MLK service projects near you!

Freedom Friday: The Stay Connected Edition

Greetings Good People!

This week, my faith has definitely been tested.

When you have a dream or a goal, the only way it will come to pass is when you just step out there.  Whenever I have an idea, I have to make a conscious decision to make it happen.  And I find when I begin to move, or make that “leap of faith”, things begin to happen.  However, taking the jump is the first and easiest part for me.    What do you do when you are in mid-air, and the net hasn’t appeared yet?    This is really where my faith is tested.

How am I going to find the money?  How am I going to get along with these people?  How am I going to do all this work?  How am I going to make it work?  This is doubt, fear or uncertainty that plagues all of us.  However, we have to remember that faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see (Hebrews 11:1).   I will admit, at times, I get a little nervous and have some sleepless nights.  However, eventually, my faith activates, and my will and determination rises up in me and says “You are going to do this.”  Instead of feeling beaten or discouraged, the challenges motivate me to overcome them.  And even when things don’t turn out the way I pictured, I find that it still is a blessing because I tend to learn more about myself and how to become better.  So I guess you can say it is a win-win situation.

And when I overcome my challenges eventually, I always am in awe to see “a way made out of no way” and wonder why I had doubt in the first place.  God hasn’t failed me yet.  And the more we activate our faith, I believe, we are linking ourselves to God, the universe, the Light, that greater and better part of ourselves.  So it is so important to stay connected.   And when more of us are connected, we are more unified and more powerful to make a positive difference in the world.

So how do you connect?  Prayer, meditation, yoga, sitting in silence, singing, reading sacred texts.  Just do it! :-)   And the more you do it, the more each of us can jump with purpose, with confidence and in love.

Have a great weekend!

Peace and Blessings, ThatKellieGirl
