Freedom Friday: Happy Chinese New Year

Hello Lovelies!

This Monday, millions of people began ringing in the Lunar New Year.  In DC, the new year will be celebrated on Sunday in Chinatown. 2012 is the year of the dragon. The year of the dragon is considered to be the luckiest of the Chinese lunar years.  ThatKellieGirl was born in the year of the dragon, so we will see what is in store for the rest of the year.

In the meantime, enjoy this unseasonably warm weather by heading out to some great events this weekend.

Freedom Friday: The Independence Day Edition

Hello Good People!

TGIF!

If you’re like me, I know you are ready for the long weekend!  I did so much celebrating for my birthday this month, I think I am going to take it easy (NOT!).   No seriously, I hope to relax this weekend at the beach and attend someone’s BBQ.  That’s not too bad. :-)

There are some great concerts going on this weekend.  If you can, check out Eric Roberson at the Birchmere, Kid Cudi at the Merriweather Post Pavilion and the one and only R. Kelly at the Verizon Center.

BTW…I know we  have different views and opinions about the state of America.  However, this weekend, let’s focus on the positive.  We have to acknowledge the freedom and liberties afforded to us that we take for granted.  When we focus on what’s right with our country, it can motivate each of us to help make our country better.  You don’t have to run for Mayor or the PTA.  You can start right in your home and local community by getting involved.  As Margaret Mead once said, “Never underestimate the power of a few committed individuals to change the world. Indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.”  This whole country was founded by seven passionate men that motivated others to fight for their independence.   When you are passionate and committed, you can fight and achieve a litter free street, safe schools, a healthy lifestyle, whatever!  As a teacher said to me once, “I achieved not because I was the smartest, the fastest, the prettiest or had connections.  I achieved because I had perseverance.  I stuck to it.”  If you are passionate and committed, you can make any change –physically, mentally, spiritually or in your community.  You can be the change you want to see.

Happy Independence Day!

Freedom Friday: The Block is Hot Edition

Hello Good Folks!

TGIF! :-)

Summer is right around the corner, but things are already in full gear– high temperatures and power outages.  Hopefully, your lights are back on.   With all of this, I am ready for the weekend to cool out and relax.

You can start by chilling out at the Annual Capital Jazz Festival  starting tonight with legends Herbie Hancock, David Sanburn and George Duke!  The whole weekend has a great line-up.  You can still get tickets at the door, at least for lawn seating .

For those who want to support a great cause and get some excercise, on Saturday, the Susan G. Komen Global Race for the Cure begins at 8AM at the National Mall.  If you still want to run, you can do late registration until 6PM today (6/3) at the Hyatt (400 New Jersey Avenue, NW ).

The temperature seems to have evened out, so check out some events.

Lastly, shout out to all my fellow Geminis.  Let’s get it in! :-)

Smooches!

Freedom Friday: The Parents’ Day Edition

Happy Mother's Day and Father's Day!

Hello Everyone!

This weekend, my family has decided to do things differently.  What’s new?! :-)

We are celebrating Mother’s Day and Father’s Day TOGETHER.  The reality of the situation is that fathers’ seem to get the short end of the stick sometimes.  For my situation, my Dad is so laid back and nonchalant you tend to think “I will just send him the gift and he will be happy”.  On the other hand, we lay out the red carpet for Mom.  The woman who carried each of my siblings for nine months and was in labor for hours to bring us into the world.   This card out seems to trump everything.  However, you have to give it up for Dad for being a provider and supporting the family also.  We might think Dad doesn’t want a big fuss, but they like the fanfare just as much as mothers.

So in my family’s effort to bring balance to Mother’s Day and Father’s Day (It’s the yin and yang ya’ll!), we are celebrating them together.     Both of them are equally important and essential in building our family.  Both holidays are celebrating the same thing– their love and sacrifice to their family and community.   A colleague asked “well don’t you think each parents deserves their own day?”  I replied “yes, it’s called their birthday!” :-)

Therefore, ThatKellieGirl is officially celebrating “Parents’ Day“.

Enjoy the weekend ya’ll! :-)
