Music Monday

Good Morning Good People,

The honey and I headed to Fort DuPont Park for their free summer concert series on Saturday. Like most residents in the DC Metro Area, this is a summer ritual.  However, I was REALLY excited this time for the concert.  My honey didn’t understand my excitement.  So I told him I was going to show so home state love to Zapp.  The honey was surprised to hear that Zapp and Roger hailed from my home state of Ohio.  He thought they were from the West coast.   Roger was one of the old school artists that influenced the “G-Funk era” of West Coast rap.  And we all know his collabo with Tupac Shakur on ”California Love“.  However, believe it or not, this funk and soul was born and bred in Ohio.  To the honey, I proudly listed some talented Ohio musicians such as The Ohio Players, Bootsie Collins, Lakeside, The O’Jay’s, The Deele, LeVert, The Rude Boys, Men-At-Large, Conya Doss, John Legend, just to name a few.  Needless to say, he wasn’t very impressed.

Freedom Friday: The Omegageddon Edition

Hey My People,

If you don’t know, you will know by the end of the weekend that the “Ques” are in town!  Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. return to their birthplace– the campus of Howard University to celebrate their 100th year anniversary.  I think it is wonderful to have an organization of African-American men promoting brotherhood, leadership and service within the community.

If you want to party with the Brothers of Omega Psi Phi, there is plenty of opportunities!  Shaq and Tom Joyner are hosting the Celebrity Omega Men Bash at Ibiza tonight.   You can also keep up to date on all the events here.  You also can follow the bruhs on Twitter and on Facebook to know what’s going on.

If you are trying to avoid the crowds, check out these other alternatives below.

Peace and Blessings family! :-)

Freedom Friday: Living Beneath Your Means Edition

Hey Good People,

Happy Friday!

If you have been following the news, you have heard about the feud over the debt ceiling.  In order for the U.S. to meet all its obligations, entitlements, discretionary spending and everything else required to run our government, we need to borrow to stay afloat.  So if we don’t raise the debt ceiling, the government could default on its debt, which has never happened in U.S. history.  U.S. Treasury bonds are held around the world, so a U.S. default would create economic chaos.  This is pretty scary stuff folks (at least to me).

I believe that unfortunately we have to raise the debt ceiling.  However, afterwards, we have to change our spending habits and focus on debt reduction. What a novel idea!

Seriously, we all need to take personal inventory of our individual debt ceiling.  As I learned growing up (and still mastering), learn to live beneath your means.  So you might have to cut off that cable for a while and grab a book….hop on the bus or your bike to get around town….. cook dinner at home, then  eat those left-overs for lunch….instead of going out to dinner, have a cook-out in the park with friends.  Hmmm….Doesn’t sound too bad to me! :-)

One way to save when hanging out is to check out the Fort DuPont Park Concerts .  It is a FREE event and kicks off this Saturday.  And if you have enough in your budget,  you can get a ticket for the Carter Barron’s Summer Concert Series.  It is still going strong with Lakeside, Brick and the BT Express on Saturday.

Keep maintaining out there.  Peace and Blessings, ThatKellieGirl :-)
