ThatKellieGirl was on the scene for the Black President’s Day on Thursday. This is one of my favorite annual events. Produced by Risikat “Kat” Okedeyi, founder of Lil SoSo Production, Black President’s Day serves as the official DC tribute to Afrobeat creator Fela Anikulapo-Kuti.

Hey Good People!
This Saturday, The Axel F Party is celebrating its One Year Anniversary Party. The brainchild of DJs Jahsonic, Stylus and Adrian Loving, Axel F (named after Eddie Murphy’s character from Beverly Hills Cop) is about the illest jheri curl funk, champagne soul and lazer boogie cuts from 1977 – 1987. In addition to a killer ’80s setlist, there will be live performances by the Sexual Chocolate Band & Show (think Murphy’s character Randy Watson from Coming to America) featuring Zo!, Deborah Bond, Phonte, Ne’a Posey, and N’digo Rose. Yeah, it’s going to be like that!
Freedom Friday: The Red Tails Edition
Happy Friday Everyone!
If you are looking forward to catching Red Tails this weekend, I recommend buying your ticket last week!
It looks like theaters will be packed with enthusiastic movie-goers. I am glad that this overlooked part of black history, American history is coming to the forefront again. How many WWII films and documentaries were made with no mention of African-American soldiers and their accomplishments? Some folks have pointed out that this isn’t the first time the history of The Tuskegee Airmen was turned into a movie. And I think that’s great. Our stories must be re-told consistently to ensure that we don’t forget our history. I also hope we continue to stay enthusiastic about black history. We have such a rich history that has never been fully told, and we shouldn’t wait until someone makes a movie to learn about it. We can read a book, an article or watch a documentary. Or here’s a novel idea, talk to members of our family!
More than likely, we have uncles, aunts, or older cousins who can talk to us about our history in a real way, not just to be entertained, then forget about it. Movies are a very powerful and impactful platform, but that is just a starting point. Let’s use this as an opportunity to connect and inspire one another to accomplish even greater things in the future.
There are several “watch” parties for Red Tails this Saturday, here, here and here.
Peace and Blessings, ThatKellieGirl

Freedom Friday: The Happy Holidays Edition
Happy Holidays Good Folks!
Let the holiday parties begin!
I am sooo looking forward to the hustle and bustle of holiday festivities. Now, I don’t get into holiday shopping. I actually try to avoid it by purchasing earlier in the year or on-line. However, if I need to buy a gift, I totally avoid the mall and head to local small businesses. However, for me, the holiday season is about connecting and reconnecting with friends and loved ones. I usually try to “set things right” before entering into the New Year. I also take the time to give thanks and to celebrate my accomplishments for the year. So whatever you do, don’t allow the holidays to become stressful or overwhelming for you. Figure out how you are going to live in the moment in order to fully enjoy the holiday season.
Sending a shout out to the Alphas for their 105th Founder’s Day. There are celebrations going on Saturday at Mood Lounge and Teatro.
Othello closes out this weekend at the Folger Shakespeare Library.
And the holidays would not be complete without these classic Christmas plays. The Washington Ballet performs The Nutcracker at the Warner Theater from December 1-24 and A Christmas Carol is playing at the Ford’s Theater until December 31.
Enjoy your weekend!
Peace and Blessings, ThatKellieGirl

Hey My People,
If you don’t know, you will know by the end of the weekend that the “Ques” are in town! Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. return to their birthplace– the campus of Howard University to celebrate their 100th year anniversary. I think it is wonderful to have an organization of African-American men promoting brotherhood, leadership and service within the community.
If you want to party with the Brothers of Omega Psi Phi, there is plenty of opportunities! Shaq and Tom Joyner are hosting the Celebrity Omega Men Bash at Ibiza tonight. You can also keep up to date on all the events here. You also can follow the bruhs on Twitter and on Facebook to know what’s going on.
If you are trying to avoid the crowds, check out these other alternatives below.
