This Monday, millions of people began ringing in the Lunar New Year. In DC, the new year will be celebrated on Sunday in Chinatown. 2012 is the year of the dragon. The year of the dragon is considered to be the luckiest of the Chinese lunar years. ThatKellieGirl was born in the year of the dragon, so we will see what is in store for the rest of the year.
In the meantime, enjoy this unseasonably warm weather by heading out to some great events this weekend.
This Saturday, The Axel F Party is celebrating its One Year Anniversary Party. The brainchild of DJs Jahsonic, Stylus and Adrian Loving, Axel F (named after Eddie Murphy’s character from Beverly Hills Cop) is about the illest jheri curl funk, champagne soul and lazer boogie cuts from 1977 – 1987. In addition to a killer ’80s setlist, there will be live performances by the Sexual Chocolate Band & Show (think Murphy’s character Randy Watson from Coming to America) featuring Zo!, Deborah Bond, Phonte, Ne’a Posey, and N’digo Rose. Yeah, it’s going to be like that!
Here is a recap of some stand-out artists. I am looking forward to more wonderful music in the future from these artists. And if you haven’t heard about these artists, please check them out.
The new kids on the block, King came out strong with their EP, The Story followed up with the heartfelt, All the Kisses with Phonte of The Foreign Exchange. I am quite excited to see what is in store for King. Download “All the Kisses” here. Get their EP The Story from iTunes here.
Tracy Cruz has soul and passion. Her release Universal Symphony thumped with the single Love’s Galaxy. I hope to hear more from the lovely Ms. Cruz.

Avery Sunshine is soul sista No. 1. She has emerged on the scene with a voice that is bold, beautiful and brilliant. She’s been performing often in the DMV so make sure you check her out.
I am so delighted to have found out about Gregory Porter. This brother is a powerhouse and I am really excited that he has a new album, Be Good coming out in 2012.

And last, but not least, I have to give an honorable mention to Wildcookie, a music collaboration between Freddie Cruger & Anthony Mills. Wildcookie came out strong and stirred the pot with the song, Heroine. The music is soulful and out the box, so I am intrigued to see what else is up their sleeves. Listen to the full album here.
I am so ready for the long Columbus Day weekend. And we are supposed to get some good weather. I will take it! Check out some awesome events, and I will see you on the other side. Peace, ThatKellieGirl!
