Freedom Friday: The Speak Life Edition

Hello Good People!

I hope you are enjoying your day off.  I sure am.  It really came right on time for me.

Earlier this week, I received an email from The Soul Power Coach, Ms. Adrienne.  She sent a message about the importance of “speaking life” to one another.  She wrote about how her beautiful Grandmother provided an example of speaking life to the people she meets each day.  This really struck a chord with me.As I have started new endeavors– my blog, hosting events, learning new skills– I have had many people “speak life” or encourage me to keep doing what I am doing.  However, I also have been the recipient of “not so flattering” words. Unfortunately, I believe that having a “Debbie Downer” or “Negative Ned” attitude is a learned behavior.  We have to be very aware of our thoughts and actions.  We have to guard against automatically “going into the dark room” or jumping to conclusions when we hear new ideas, thoughts or endeavors.  It is very important that we encourage each other in positive pursuits.  And when no one sees your vision, then you have to encourage yourself.

Life and death is in the power of the tongue.  Which language do you speak most often?

Lastly, many thanks to the veterans who have served our country and to their families whose sacrifices made this service possible.  Happy Veteran’s Day.

Peace and Blessings, ThatKellieGirl

Freedom Friday: The Homecoming Edition

Happy Friday!

When I was in college, the two events you HAD to attend were the defunct Freaknik in Atlanta and Howard’s Homecoming in D.C.  These were mandatory events as a black college student.   I’d been hearing about both of these events since I was a senior in high school.    These were like the meccas for black college students.  I must admit, I never made it to Freaknik, but I have taken part in Howard’s Homecoming celebrations.  Now for the record, I did not attend Howard or any HBCU.  So I had “ homecoming envy” because the events were so much fun.  I mean, how could you not beam with pride when your school received a shot out from the Notorious B.I.G., the biggest rapper during my college years!   :-)

I love homecoming for the excitement, joyous energy and pride.  However, to me, homecoming ultimately means honoring my humble beginnings.  The opportunity to celebrate the accomplishments, challenges and lessons that helped mold me into the person I am today.   To come home to reconcile or “to make right” with family, friends or myself in order to start fresh and embrace the future.  Homecoming means being proud, and never ashamed, of who you are and where you come from.  So always take time to honor and celebrate your past.  You can do this at  homecomings, reunions, birthdays, anniversaries.  Or simply light a candle, hang a picture or journal.  Just live a life to be remembered by your family and friends.

And for those who want to join the HU celebration, here is a list of events.

Also, be on the look out for ThatKellieGirl tonight on Soul Conversations on WPFW, 89.3FM.  I  am partnering with Words, Beat and Life to host the Boo Bash Costume Party on October 29th to raise money for their scholarship fund. So we will be talking about our efforts.  Please check me out tonight on Soul Conversations at 11PM.

Have a great weekend!

Peace and Blessings,  ThatKellieGirl

Freedom Friday: The Fall Edition

Hey Good Folks!

TGIF. :-)

Today is the official first day of fall!  As much as I love summer, I am not sad to see the hot and humid temperatures leave.  I am looking forward to the cool temperatures, the warm clothing, the hats, the scarves, the boots (I love my boots!), the beautiful colored leaves, the pumpkins patches and hay rides.  I guess my midwest sensibilities are showing! :-)   So the season is just right for all of the fabulous festivals that are kicking off this weekend.  There are some great events for everyone.  You can start off  with some political networking and socializing at the 2011 Annual Legislative Caucus for the Congress Black Caucus at the Washington Convention Center.  If you can’t make it down there, you can watch parts of the conference on their webcast.  You also can visit the free showcase exhibits to check out job opportunities, businesses and the author’s pavilion.  There are also various receptions and parties throughout the city.

If you prefer to shed the suit and tie for the weekend, Kindred will be performing at the Birchmere on Sunday.

Make sure to stay safe out there. Enjoy!

Peace and Blessings, ThatKellieGirl

Freedom Friday: The President’s Speech Edition

Courtesy of Kevin Lamarque/Pool/AP Photo

Hello Good Folks!

Whether you agree or not agree with the American Jobs Act, President Obama came with it last night.  He presented a solid plan, but he also let Congress know that he’s not playing nice anymore.  When you are elected President, you have at least four years to work your plan.  And President Obama has accomplished a lot that he isn’t given credit or is flat-out ignored.  Besides, if anyone watched the GOP debates, I think we need to be concerned about their plan for Americans.  Especially when you have a candidate like Rick Perry who calls social security a “Ponzi scheme” and proudly defends the execution of 234 people in Texas, more than any other Governor in modern times.  I guess they haven’t learned the lesson about what happens when we use divise language and untruths to win at all costs.  I don’t believe in bully politics, but I do believe in being assertive.  And I believe President Obama finally got the memo.

And as a group of my friends watched President Obama finish his speech, we all wished Obama could have dropped the mic Randy Watson style

Earthquakes, hurricanes, now floods….it’s coming to an end.  Summer that is. :-)     So this weekend, the outdoor festivals are winding up.  Check out the Virgin Music Festival is at the Merriweather Post Pavillion on Saturday.  And Bilal will be at the Birchmere on Sunday.  And on Sunday, check out the National Triathlon benefiting the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Enjoy your weekend.  And be safe out there as we commemorate 9-11.

Peace and blessings, ThatKellieGirl

TGIF Everyone!

It is HAWT out there folks.  It is a “Code Red” alert making it very unhealthy and unsafe to be outside. (In my Frankie voice, “Code 10, Man Down! *lol*)  If you don’t have to go outside, DON’T!  At least, wait until this evening.

For this weekend, the incomparable Charlies Wilson and EnVogue will be at Constitution Hall Saturday (7/23) and Wiz Khalifa is out at Merriweather Post Pavillion on Sunday (7/24).

And check out the other happenings this weekend.

Freedom Friday: The No Pictures Please Edition

Best picture I could get with my BB due to U Street Music Hall's "no photos" policy

Hey Good People!

WHEW!

ThatKellieGirl has been hitting the streets hard this week–from concerts to receptions to book signings.  Friday is becoming my day of rest for the week! :-)

And just for the record, U Street Music Hall has been killing me with their  ”no photography” policy.  I was trying to get some pics of the Crossrhodes Reunion Show. This was the second time I went to an event there, and the bodyguard was on anyone with a camera  HARD about taking pictures.  At times,  I felt he was down right rude, but I guess it was a frustrating job.  And he wasn’t paid to be nice.  It was sort of funny though.  We saw the bodyguard lurking and peeping us from the corners, then from the stage, then BAM! he was in our faces.  It’s crazy!  For the record, you can take pics with your cell, but unless you are the official event photog, you gets no camera love.  I sneaked a few shots, but nothing worthy.  If I am able to find some pics, I will share them with you. :-)

Overall though, the show was great.  Incwell opened up the show.  I love this guy’s voice and he has some good lyrics.  And, his band was the truth…dj, horn section, congas, a fierce sista on the drums and good background singers.  They got a good synergy.  And the main event didn’t disappoint…great stage presence and audience interaction.  As much as I enjoyed hearing the old songs, I was more excited to hear that there will be new stuff on their upcoming “Don’t Bring Sand to the Beach”.  A shout out to the Urban Ave 31 fan group.  They represented hard!!!!

Here are some events for the weekend.

Sending love and blessings to everyone! :-)

Freedom Friday: The Parents’ Day Edition

Happy Mother's Day and Father's Day!

Hello Everyone!

This weekend, my family has decided to do things differently.  What’s new?! :-)

We are celebrating Mother’s Day and Father’s Day TOGETHER.  The reality of the situation is that fathers’ seem to get the short end of the stick sometimes.  For my situation, my Dad is so laid back and nonchalant you tend to think “I will just send him the gift and he will be happy”.  On the other hand, we lay out the red carpet for Mom.  The woman who carried each of my siblings for nine months and was in labor for hours to bring us into the world.   This card out seems to trump everything.  However, you have to give it up for Dad for being a provider and supporting the family also.  We might think Dad doesn’t want a big fuss, but they like the fanfare just as much as mothers.

So in my family’s effort to bring balance to Mother’s Day and Father’s Day (It’s the yin and yang ya’ll!), we are celebrating them together.     Both of them are equally important and essential in building our family.  Both holidays are celebrating the same thing– their love and sacrifice to their family and community.   A colleague asked “well don’t you think each parents deserves their own day?”  I replied “yes, it’s called their birthday!” :-)

Therefore, ThatKellieGirl is officially celebrating “Parents’ Day“.

Enjoy the weekend ya’ll! :-)

Freedom Friday: The Shutdown Edition

Hello Folks,

All I can say is that it is hectic right now with this government shutdown.   You can cut the  tension with a knife.  Everyone is holding their breathe….

To be quite candid with you, I am really angry about this situation.  Due to ideological differences and political posturing, Americans will now have to muddle through this situation.  And it only breads more contempt for the government, political parties and the political process.  The effect is bigger than not getting a pay check.

However, instead of getting upset and worrying about the situation, we must to take a “victor”  rather than “victim” attitude.  If anything, this situation makes it more real to me that we have to have faith in ourselves and begin to strengthen our families and communities.  Our livelihoods are too dependent upon other people who do not know us and have little in common with us.  We must begin to build strong, community networks so that in times of famine, we are able to sustain ourselves.  In a time of economic uncertainty and political change, we first have to have faith that everything is going to be alright.  Second, courage to believe that we have everything within ourselves to provide for ourselves and our communities.  And lastly, more than ever, we must show our humanity towards each other.

One last thing, turn off the radio and the TV!  Hearing too much of this mess only heightens our fears and anxiety.  Instead, get out and enjoy the weekend.

Freedom Friday: The Cherry Blossom Edition

Hello Good People!

TGIF! :-)

I hope the dip in temperatures doesn’t keep you in the house.  It is action-packed this weekend.

My weekend kicks off as soon as I leave the J-O-B!  My Honey surprised me with tickets to see Naturally 7 this evening at the Strathmore.  I was impressed and enjoyed their BET Honor’s performance in honor of Herbie Hancock.  These brothers are bad!  So I am quite excited to see their live performance.

Tomorrow, The National Cherry Blossoms Festival officially kicks off (March 26-April 10).  Each year, the festival celebrates spring in the District, the gift of the cherry blossom trees and the enduring friendship between the people of the United States and Japan.  And Japan needs our friendship, support and prayers more than ever with the recent disaster. Check out the festival over the next 2 weeks.

And for all you runners out there, The National Marathon takes place on Saturday. There are still a limited number of bibs available for the marathon and half marathon. So get there before the 7AM start.

I also would like to send out a “Happy Black Marriage Day” to my parents this Sunday.  My parents truly provided a marriage model for me.  Not that they are perfect, but they taught and showed faith in God and each other, unconditional love, respect and hope.  So it is befitting that a day of love coincides with the cherry blossoms which represents good fortune and an emblem of love and affection.

So go out and show some love!  :-) And check out these ThatKellieGirl approved events.

Peace and Blessings.
