Freedom Friday: The Happy Holidays Edition

Happy Holidays Good Folks!

Let the holiday parties begin! :-)

I am sooo looking forward to the hustle and bustle of holiday festivities.  Now, I don’t get into holiday shopping.  I actually try to avoid it by purchasing earlier in the year or on-line. However, if I need to buy a gift, I totally avoid the mall and head to local small businesses.   However, for me, the holiday season is about connecting and reconnecting with friends and loved ones.  I usually try to “set things right” before entering into the New Year.  I also take the time to give thanks and to celebrate my accomplishments for the year.    So whatever you do, don’t allow the holidays to become stressful or overwhelming for you. Figure out how you are going to live in the moment in order to fully enjoy the holiday season.

Sending a shout out to the Alphas for their 105th Founder’s Day.  There are celebrations going on Saturday at Mood Lounge and Teatro

Othello closes out this weekend at the Folger Shakespeare Library.

And the holidays would not be complete without these classic Christmas plays.  The Washington Ballet performs The Nutcracker at the Warner Theater from December 1-24 and  A Christmas Carol is playing at the Ford’s Theater until December 31.

Enjoy your weekend!

Peace and Blessings, ThatKellieGirl

Freedom Friday: The Homecoming Edition

Happy Friday!

When I was in college, the two events you HAD to attend were the defunct Freaknik in Atlanta and Howard’s Homecoming in D.C.  These were mandatory events as a black college student.   I’d been hearing about both of these events since I was a senior in high school.    These were like the meccas for black college students.  I must admit, I never made it to Freaknik, but I have taken part in Howard’s Homecoming celebrations.  Now for the record, I did not attend Howard or any HBCU.  So I had “ homecoming envy” because the events were so much fun.  I mean, how could you not beam with pride when your school received a shot out from the Notorious B.I.G., the biggest rapper during my college years!   :-)

I love homecoming for the excitement, joyous energy and pride.  However, to me, homecoming ultimately means honoring my humble beginnings.  The opportunity to celebrate the accomplishments, challenges and lessons that helped mold me into the person I am today.   To come home to reconcile or “to make right” with family, friends or myself in order to start fresh and embrace the future.  Homecoming means being proud, and never ashamed, of who you are and where you come from.  So always take time to honor and celebrate your past.  You can do this at  homecomings, reunions, birthdays, anniversaries.  Or simply light a candle, hang a picture or journal.  Just live a life to be remembered by your family and friends.

And for those who want to join the HU celebration, here is a list of events.

Also, be on the look out for ThatKellieGirl tonight on Soul Conversations on WPFW, 89.3FM.  I  am partnering with Words, Beat and Life to host the Boo Bash Costume Party on October 29th to raise money for their scholarship fund. So we will be talking about our efforts.  Please check me out tonight on Soul Conversations at 11PM.

Have a great weekend!

Peace and Blessings,  ThatKellieGirl

Freedom Friday: The Labor Day Edition

Hello Good People!

Happy Labor Day to all those folks who work hard for the money.  This weekend is jam-packed with some TKG approved events! :-)  We get a chance to catch up after Storm Irene kept us inside last weekend.  Whatever you decide to do, just remember to be thankful for your job.  And if you don’t like it, change your attitude or change your job (#justsaying).  There will always be challenges on the job, but it’s about how you deal with it.  I believe it’s ultimately about doing what you love.  And if you aren’t fortunate to do it from 9 to 5, then make sure you do it after 5.  You never know what doors might open.

Peace and blessings, ThatKellieGirl

Freedom Friday: Emancipation Day Edition

Celebrate our rich heritage, Celebrate Emancipation Day (Courtesy of Smithsonianmag.com)

Hello Good People,

April showers bring May flowers!  Remember that? :-)

I hope everyone had a good week, and I know you are ready for the weekend.

In honor of the of the emancipation of slaves of African origin, Emancipation Day is tomorrow (4/16).  Check here and here for Emancipation Day events. Take this opportunity to pass on our rich history to young people.

Filmfest DC ends this weekend.  I checked out a movie last Sunday called Transfer.  I love sci-fi so I was quite excited to view this movie.  It was about  a rich old couple from Germany who decides to buy the bodies of two black Africans.  The German couple regain their youth while the Africans ensures that their families get money. However, four hours every night, the Africans regain control over their bodies.  After a while, the African hosts and the German guests begin to communicate with each other.  As the story progresses, the “Transfer” isn’t as simple as advertised.  Sci-fi Blogger, Martin Wikner  reviews Transfer as revealing “the relation between the rich and the poor in the world. In this movie we see how Europeans exploit Africans to the degree that “we” take over their bodies. This makes it sci-fi, but is a good metaphor for how we make others give up their life for our well-being, without really knowing or considering the costs. The African couple do sign their contracts by free will, but the question is how free the choice really is.”  A stand-out performance from actor BJ Britt.

The Annual Servathon event sponsored by Greater DC Cares is tomorrow (4/16).  It is a great opportunity to give back to the community.  It’s not too late to sign up.

Enjoy your weekend!

Peace and Blessings. :-)

Freedom Friday: The Cherry Blossom Edition

Hello Good People!

TGIF! :-)

I hope the dip in temperatures doesn’t keep you in the house.  It is action-packed this weekend.

My weekend kicks off as soon as I leave the J-O-B!  My Honey surprised me with tickets to see Naturally 7 this evening at the Strathmore.  I was impressed and enjoyed their BET Honor’s performance in honor of Herbie Hancock.  These brothers are bad!  So I am quite excited to see their live performance.

Tomorrow, The National Cherry Blossoms Festival officially kicks off (March 26-April 10).  Each year, the festival celebrates spring in the District, the gift of the cherry blossom trees and the enduring friendship between the people of the United States and Japan.  And Japan needs our friendship, support and prayers more than ever with the recent disaster. Check out the festival over the next 2 weeks.

And for all you runners out there, The National Marathon takes place on Saturday. There are still a limited number of bibs available for the marathon and half marathon. So get there before the 7AM start.

I also would like to send out a “Happy Black Marriage Day” to my parents this Sunday.  My parents truly provided a marriage model for me.  Not that they are perfect, but they taught and showed faith in God and each other, unconditional love, respect and hope.  So it is befitting that a day of love coincides with the cherry blossoms which represents good fortune and an emblem of love and affection.

So go out and show some love!  :-) And check out these ThatKellieGirl approved events.

Peace and Blessings.
