Freedom Friday: Memorial Day Weekend Edition

Malvin Gray Johnson (American, 1896-1934). Negro Soldier, 1934. Oil on canvas, 38 x 30 in. (96.5 x 76.2 cm). Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, Art & Artifacts Division, The New York Public Library, Astor, Lenox and Tilden Foundations

Hey Good People!

Happy Freedom Friday. :-)

We all know that this is the long weekend for Memorial Day.  I know we like to party, but it really is about honoring the soldiers who currently serve or have served in the military.  As I was looking for information on Memorial Day, I found this wonderful Black History photo album that has a set focusing on black male and female soldiers throughout the years.  Unfortunately, this is a part of black history rarely talked about in our community.  But it is an important aspect of our history that should not be forgotten.  We must remember and pass our history to the younger generation so they know where they came from and who they are.  I couldn’t believe it when I found out several of my uncles and my grandfather served in the military.  I heard a story that my grandfather was mistakenly placed in the barracks with the white soldiers, so he informed his superiors he was “colored” so he could serve with his fellow black soldiers.

The African American Civil War Memorial will host a memorial on Sunday.   There also is the National WWII Memorial , Vietnam Veterans Memorial  and many other military memorials hosting events.

For the rest of the weekend…

On Friday, Amel Larrieux will be performing at the Howard TheaterLalah Hathaway also will be at the Howard Theater on Saturday.  Then she joins Avery Sunshine at Soundstage in Baltimore on Sunday.

And I know folks are gearing up for the annual Linganore Wine Festival on Saturday and Sunday.  This is such a fun event.  You have to attend at least once.

Please be safe out this weekend, have fun.

Peace and Blessings, ThatKellieGirl
