This rainy day is perfect to listen to some mellow, but moving music from soul singer, Abiah (formerly known as Jeremiah).  His sophomore album, “Life As a Ballad” is simply beautiful.

Freedom Friday

Hello My Good people!
It’s been a minute since we’ve had a Freedom Friday, but ThatKellieGirl is back!  :-)
ThatKellieGirl has been playing catch up since returning from travel.  Then, we all hunkered down to brace for Hurricane Sandy.   But we, well some of us, ended on a high note with the re-election of President Obama! :-)
Regardless of what is happening around us or to us, we must remember to count our blessings and not our burdens.  Sometimes, it seems so easy to tell someone what is going wrong in our lives?  I understand that we all have to blow off some steam.  But if you always have a complaint, grudge, or problem, then it’s time to shift your perspective.

Celebration of the Re-election of President Obama on U St

Hello Everyone,

ThatKellieGirl was in the streets celebrating the re-election of President Obama! People poured out onto U Street and throughout the Distirct to rejoice over his win.  It was truly an inspiring (and at times entertaining) sight.

ThatKellieGirl’s World Tour: Nigeria

ThatKellieGirl in her Nigerian dress and wrap.

ThatKellieGirl has been on a life-changing trip to Nigeria!  There is something about traveling that truly awakens you to the world—if you are willing to see.  More Americans should take the opportunity to travel our country and the world, and to learn about what is happening around the world.

I have always had a fascination and appreciation of Africa since I was a young girl.  I learned about Africa in general through books and media, but not until I had several discussions with my fiancé and listened to his family talk about Nigeria, did I begin to gain a better understanding of the country and the continent.  Unfortunately, many Americans are only familiar with the negative aspects—corruption, terrorism, lack of infrastructure, poverty, famines, etc.  But this is only part of the story.  And even as you read this post, it is another part of the story.  As with any person, place or idea, you have to bring it all together from multiple sources to get a comprehensive understanding.

Music Monday

Just in time for the debut of her new reality show, here is Faith Evans’ newest single “Tears of Joy”.   And Faith doesn’t disappoint with her flawless vocals and the emotion she evokes in the song.  For anyone in love, you will definitely feel it.   Her upcoming album “R&B Divas”, a companion album to the show, drops October 12th.

Good Morning Good Folks!

It’s  a new day with new possibilities.  :-) I hope you are ready for the week.

To get us started, check out this video, “Sweetest Thing” from the talented singer, AB The Confidant.  This fellow Ohioan has burst on the scene with his EP, The Prologue, Vol I covering some of my favorite RnB songs.   Let’s just say I keep his “Kissing You” and “Strawberry Letter” on repeat.

The Lion Ride

ThatKellieGirl and Frederick Douglass at The Lion Ride.

It’s a beautiful thing when you see the fruits of your labor.  Yesterday, ThatKellieGirl was so excited to be a part of the inaugural “Lion Ride”.  ThatKellieGirl was on the planning committee with the Washington Area Bicyclist Association (WABA) to host the biking event in honor of civil rights advocate and former Anacostia resident Frederick Douglass.  The event was named “The Lion Ride” because Douglass was known as the “Lion” of Anacostia because of his mane-like hair. :-)   The event was in partnership with the 5th Annual Frederick Douglass Family Day hosted by Fredrick Douglass National Historic Site.  We also partnered with Capital Bikeshare and Bike & Roll who loaned out bikes and helmets to attendees.   We had close to 100 people show-up to ride bikes from the Frederick Douglass House to Anacostia Park!  It was hot, but thank goodness for the breeze off of the Anacostia River to cool us down a bit! :-)    Attendees were treated to free ice cream, cupcakes, music, dancing, bicycle portraits, historic house tours, and Massachusetts 54th re-enactors.  And the Frederick Douglass impersonator was a big hit with everyone! :-)

If you know ThatKellieGirl, you know I love to do bike rides.  However, this was by far my favorite bike ride event.  I was so happy to hear so many people say this was their first time on a bike since they were a kid.  And to see so many young people who were excited to ride bikes was priceless.  To me, it really is about the youth and creating a generation that is conscious about their history, their health and fitness and their community.

And a BIG “Thank You” to Adrienne McCray for recruiting bike marshalls from Artemis Bicycling Club.  ThatKellieGirl is already looking forward to next year.  And I hope you will join us.  Enjoy the pictures below. :)

Happy Monday!

Peace and Blessings, ThatKellieGirl

ThatKellieGirl, the Impressionist Artist

Hello Good People!

My weekend is starting off right.  Yesterday, my girlfriend and I took a painting class through Living Social.  Both of us love art and have dabbled in painting.  So for my birthday, we took the class.  First off, let me say that the Living Social Building (918 F St NW) is a FUN HOUSE.  Not only were they teaching art classes, they were teaching burlesque classes and hosting a happy hour karaoke night.  The building is huge and all the Living Social staff were very nice and helpful.  I definitely will be back.  If you get a chance, check it out.
