Music Monday

Happy Monday Good Folks!

I truly had a blast yesterday at the DC Tweed Ride.  The Honey and I put on our Sunday Best, 1920′s style, and rode throughout DC with our friends.  When it was all done, we rode 15 miles.  I was very proud that I did the whole ride even though I was losing steam on the way home! :-)   Pictures will be posted soon, so check back.  However, you can view some pictures from the very talented photographer, Jati Lindsay.

In the meantime, download  The Hot At Nights, Shibuya Session EP from Nicolay of Foreign Exchange fame.  It’s helping get me through this Monday!

Tracklisting:

01. Shibuya Station
02. Rain In Ueno Park
03. Satellite
04. Meiji Shrine
05. The Inner Garden
06. Crossing

Freedom Friday: The Stay Connected Edition

Greetings Good People!

This week, my faith has definitely been tested.

When you have a dream or a goal, the only way it will come to pass is when you just step out there.  Whenever I have an idea, I have to make a conscious decision to make it happen.  And I find when I begin to move, or make that “leap of faith”, things begin to happen.  However, taking the jump is the first and easiest part for me.    What do you do when you are in mid-air, and the net hasn’t appeared yet?    This is really where my faith is tested.

How am I going to find the money?  How am I going to get along with these people?  How am I going to do all this work?  How am I going to make it work?  This is doubt, fear or uncertainty that plagues all of us.  However, we have to remember that faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see (Hebrews 11:1).   I will admit, at times, I get a little nervous and have some sleepless nights.  However, eventually, my faith activates, and my will and determination rises up in me and says “You are going to do this.”  Instead of feeling beaten or discouraged, the challenges motivate me to overcome them.  And even when things don’t turn out the way I pictured, I find that it still is a blessing because I tend to learn more about myself and how to become better.  So I guess you can say it is a win-win situation.

And when I overcome my challenges eventually, I always am in awe to see “a way made out of no way” and wonder why I had doubt in the first place.  God hasn’t failed me yet.  And the more we activate our faith, I believe, we are linking ourselves to God, the universe, the Light, that greater and better part of ourselves.  So it is so important to stay connected.   And when more of us are connected, we are more unified and more powerful to make a positive difference in the world.

So how do you connect?  Prayer, meditation, yoga, sitting in silence, singing, reading sacred texts.  Just do it! :-)   And the more you do it, the more each of us can jump with purpose, with confidence and in love.

Have a great weekend!

Peace and Blessings, ThatKellieGirl

Freedom Friday: The Fall Edition

Hey Good Folks!

TGIF. :-)

Today is the official first day of fall!  As much as I love summer, I am not sad to see the hot and humid temperatures leave.  I am looking forward to the cool temperatures, the warm clothing, the hats, the scarves, the boots (I love my boots!), the beautiful colored leaves, the pumpkins patches and hay rides.  I guess my midwest sensibilities are showing! :-)   So the season is just right for all of the fabulous festivals that are kicking off this weekend.  There are some great events for everyone.  You can start off  with some political networking and socializing at the 2011 Annual Legislative Caucus for the Congress Black Caucus at the Washington Convention Center.  If you can’t make it down there, you can watch parts of the conference on their webcast.  You also can visit the free showcase exhibits to check out job opportunities, businesses and the author’s pavilion.  There are also various receptions and parties throughout the city.

If you prefer to shed the suit and tie for the weekend, Kindred will be performing at the Birchmere on Sunday.

Make sure to stay safe out there. Enjoy!

Peace and Blessings, ThatKellieGirl

Freedom Friday: Let’s Get Ready to Rumble Edition

Good Morning Folks!  TGIF.

I have a fun-filled weekend composed of arts, culture and good people!  This evening, the Honey and I will be attending the Fela! Opening Night performance.  I know this is my third time seeing it, but I truly enjoy this play.  I want to see if Fela! can loosen up the D.C. crowd.  Not to give anything away, but this play involves crowd participation!  I also will be checking out the play “Trouble in Mind” at Arena Stage.  Lastly, I will be celebrating my Honey’s sister’s birthday and celebrating a friends departure to work in Ethiopia for a year.  And I am hoping to catch the Mayweather vs. Ortiz fight. Yes, ThatKellieGirl is a boxing fan! :-)

I grew up watching boxing matches because my Dad was a big boxing fan.  Our house was the designated place for family and friends to watch boxing matches.  At that time, everyone didn’t have “premium” cable channels so our house was the spot.  So I grew up watching Larry Holmes, Marvin “Marvelous” Hagler, Tommy Hearns, Micheal Spinks, Leon Spinks and eventually my favorite, Mike Tyson.  We were having fight parties before they were called “fight parties.”  They were cherished events for my older sister and me because we were able to stay up past our bedtime.  And my sister and I relished in the anticipation of waiting and watching our Uncle Junior fall asleep in his designated chair.  This never failed! :-)   I actually can remember watching Buster Douglas knock out Mike Tyson.  My heart sank watching this fight.  I didn’t realize at that time it was the beginning of Tyson’s end.

Watching boxing actually inspired me to join the boxing club in college (at my father’s dismay).  The coach said I would be good boxer because I had long arms for good reach.  So I worked out and trained.  That club whipped me into the best shape ever.  However,  after taking my first punch, my career was over! *I know ya’ll would have loved to have seen that!*

So I have a long history with boxing.  I don’t keep up with the sport anymore, but I am always ready TO WATCH a good boxing match.

Here are some other great events…

The DC Short Films Festival closes out this weekend.  On Friday (9/16), Lupe Fiasco and friends will be at the Merriweather Post Pavillion. Rahsaan Patterson will be at the Birchmere (9/17) and Rams Head (9/18).  On Saturday (9/17), Kem will be  at the Pier Six Pavillion.

And the Filmore Silver Spring is debuting with a strong line-up.  They kicked off Thursday with Mary J. Blige.  For the weekend, John Legend is performing on Saturday (9/17) and Black Star on Sunday (9/17).

Have a great weekend!

Peace and Blessings, ThatKellieGirl

Freedom Friday: The President’s Speech Edition

Courtesy of Kevin Lamarque/Pool/AP Photo

Hello Good Folks!

Whether you agree or not agree with the American Jobs Act, President Obama came with it last night.  He presented a solid plan, but he also let Congress know that he’s not playing nice anymore.  When you are elected President, you have at least four years to work your plan.  And President Obama has accomplished a lot that he isn’t given credit or is flat-out ignored.  Besides, if anyone watched the GOP debates, I think we need to be concerned about their plan for Americans.  Especially when you have a candidate like Rick Perry who calls social security a “Ponzi scheme” and proudly defends the execution of 234 people in Texas, more than any other Governor in modern times.  I guess they haven’t learned the lesson about what happens when we use divise language and untruths to win at all costs.  I don’t believe in bully politics, but I do believe in being assertive.  And I believe President Obama finally got the memo.

And as a group of my friends watched President Obama finish his speech, we all wished Obama could have dropped the mic Randy Watson style

Earthquakes, hurricanes, now floods….it’s coming to an end.  Summer that is. :-)     So this weekend, the outdoor festivals are winding up.  Check out the Virgin Music Festival is at the Merriweather Post Pavillion on Saturday.  And Bilal will be at the Birchmere on Sunday.  And on Sunday, check out the National Triathlon benefiting the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Enjoy your weekend.  And be safe out there as we commemorate 9-11.

Peace and blessings, ThatKellieGirl
