MidWeek Mixx

Hey Good Folks,

Here is another goodie from TheLayabouts featuring Omar, “As long as you believe”.  The Layabouts have built a rock solid reputation for quality deep house – house with soul and polish.  This song is the second single from their album “The Layabouts - Future Retro”.  The album was released at the end of March and features new collaborations with Omar, Tony Momrelle, Portia Monique, Imaani, and Shea Soul.

Enjoy!

Good Morning Everyone,

If you are still making plans for this evening, check out Hidden Beach Recording Artist Jeff Bradshaw tonight!  His album “Bone Appetit” was released yesterday, April 24.

Jeff Bradshaw has been on the music scene for a while now.  In 1994, he began to meet the who’s-who of what is now the hierarchy of the Philly music community– James Poyser, Andre Harris, Vidal Davis, DJ Jazzy Jeff, Ahmir ”Quesluv” Thompson, Tarik “Black Thought” Trotter of the Legendary ROOTS CREW, DJ King Britt and othere.  This lead  to Jeff working with artists like Eryka Badu, Jill Scott, Floetry, Darius Rucker, Musiq, The Roots, Earth Wind & Fire, and Michael Jackson.  Eventually he landed a deall with Hidden Beach Records, but had to change what people thought should be a lead instrument in mainstream music.  He did just that with his album “Bone Deep“.  So now, in his first year being married to his best friend Jameelia Drinks Bradshaw, he is sharing his next body of work.  So,Bone appetite! :-)

Hey Everyone,

I am so excited to debut a very special person’s first YouTube video….my Sister!

So this weekend, she took second place in the Canton Idol competition (even though everyone said she deserved first place).  She sang Whitney Houston’s “The Greatest Love of All”.   Now she will be traveling to Columbus to compete in Ohio Idol at a chance to win cash prizes and a recording contract.  I think she did a great job and I am very proud of her.  She’s been singing since she was a child,  and I believe this is only the beginning for my Sis.  Congratulations Sis!

I hope you enjoy the video as much as I did.

Peace and Blessings, ThatKellieGirl

Freedom Friday: The Earth Day Edition

Hello Friends!  Happy Friday.

This weekend is shaping up rather nicely.  There will be beautiful weather and lots of fun things to do.  In the spirit of Earth Day, ThatKellieGirl will be volunteering at the White House Garden Tours.  I love flowers and the White House Kitchen Garden is a great model on how to and what to grow in your home garden.  Afterwards, I am attending a tea with my God Daughter and her Mother.  As you know, I always am excited to don a hat and a pair of gloves! :-)

There also are several festivals either kicking off or closing out this weekend.  Whatever you do don’t miss them.

Starting us off is The Water Street Project which is an 11 day-long  temporary arts exhibition in a vacant building underneath Whitehurst Freeway in Georgetown.  The project’s grand opening is tonight at 8PM.

The U.S. National Parks Service celebrates National Park Week with activities and promoting people to visit their local national park.

Activist Van Jones will discuss and sign his new book, Rebuild the Dream at Busboys and Poets (14th & V Sts NW) at 6:30PM.

The Earth Day Rally will take place on the National Mall as well as a “Float In” with Ralph Nader marking the 40th anniversary of The Clean Water Act and to say no to dirty, polluted water.  Here is a list of Earth Day activities and events in the area.

And Filmfest DC is closing out this weekend, so try to find time to see some provocative, exciting, and often brave stories from varying perspectives and showcasing important voices.

Whatever you do, stay safe, have fun and keep the faith. :-)

Peace and Blessings, ThatKellieGirl

Go Get It

Good Morning Good Folks!

We are going to start off Freedom Friday with a new video from Mary Mary, “Go Get It”.  The Ladies are coming strong with this motivational song.  They sing with passion and conviction that we deserve all the blessings of God.  All we have to do is “Go Get it!”  And they are looking quite fabulous in the video.  With an upcoming album release and a reality TV show, Mary Mary is practicing what they preach!  I truly wish them much success.

Happy Friday!  Enjoy. :-)

Lumen8 Anacostia

ThatKellieGirl having fun at Lumen8 Anacostia

Hello Everyone!

This past weekend, the Fiancé and I headed out to Lumen8 Anacostia.  And we were truly amazed to see vacant and underutilized store fronts and empty lots be transformed into an artist showcase with art and light installations, marketplaces and pop-up art galleries.

It was a great opportunity for the rest of the world to see what is usually overlooked by the media and overshadowed by negative reports and perceptions—the sense of community, the beautiful views of the District, and the urban artistry.

Hey Good Folks!

So I have to give a s/o to my co-worker for letting me know about Pretty Lights.  I was quite impressed when my co-worker let me hear their remix of Steve Miller Band‘s “Fly Like an Eagle“.  So as I checked out more of their music and I was feeling it! :-)
