Freedom Friday: The Birds of a Feather Edition

Hello Good People!

At one point in your life, someone has said the following: “Birds of a feather flock together” or “Show me your friends and I will tell you who you are”.  Usually when I heard these proverbs, the person was trying to warn me of the company I was keeping.  Most recently, I heard a new spin on the adage from Jim Rohn,  “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with”.     Hearing it this way really resonated with me.  I started thinking about the people around me especially those I consider members of my support circle.  I know that everyone is on a different life journey, but there should be something about each of these persons that you admire and add to your life.

At one point in my life, I used to “fall” into relationships.  I actually would just invite everyone in.  The more the merrier, right?  Well yes,but not in your inner circle.  You have to carefully consider if the people who surround you are a reflection of the person you want to become…mentally, spiritually, financially, etc.   We must be thoughtful and purposeful in the selection of friends, business partners, clients, employers and especially spouses.  I believe the best way to do this is to talk to God who should be one of the five people you spend the most time with anyways! :-)  If you start there, then you will be led by your spirit about the relationships in your life.

So who are the people you spend the most time with?

Peace and Blessings, ThatKellieGirl

For Colored Boys

The other day, I was thinking about all the commentary surrounding “For Colored Girls” concerning the negative images of black men in film.     The last film I saw that was a poignant depiction of black men and their struggles was “Nothing But A Man” (supposedly Malcolm X’s favorite film).  Even though it was made by two Jewish men, it was still honest and very touching .  Check it out.  I do hope to see a film in the 21st Century about the struggle, resilience and healing of black men.

In my own little way, I wanted to show some love to my brothers.   I have been so blessed to be surrounded by some wonderful black men in my life from my grandfather, uncles, male friends, my father and my current Boo.   These are my top 10 songs of female artists paying homage to loving, strong and committed black men.   Feel free to show some love to the positive men in your life by sharing this post.  Enjoy! :-)

1.) Orange Moon- Erykah Badu (Honorable Mentions: Solider & Other Side of the Game)

2.) Fact Is (I Need You) – Jill Scott (Honorable Mention: He Loves Me)

3.) Giving You the Best That I Got-Anita Baker

4.) No One Else- Amel Larrieux

5.) Natural Woman- Aretha Franklin

6.) I Found My Everything- Mary J. Blige

7.) Love Letters (He Wants Me To Win)-Nakia Henry (Thanks Phil for the heads up! :-) )

Listen here.

8.) Love Is You- Chrisette Michelle

9.) The Truth- India Arie (Honorable Mention: Good Man)

10.) Love Me Still- Chaka Khan

Not in MY top ten, but how could I be remiss for not mentioning “Brotha” by Angie Stone.  Enjoy! :-)

Have a great weekend!

Stop Playing

So, I am watching the Lifetime movie starring Jill Scott, and the normal commercial break interrupts.  And I can’t believe what I am seeing.  A product called Latisse developed to make your eyelashes grow longer and fuller.  It seems that “hypotrichosis of eyelashes” (inadequate or not enough eye lashes) is a serious condition for millions of women.  I just don’t understand why women are willing to endure the potential side effects for longer and fuller lashes. Vanity perhaps?  Now, if I had some incurable disease, I would seriously think about taking some medicine with potential side effects in order to save my life.  But to have longer and fuller lashes?  Stop playing.
